Well-Trained People Are Priceless

A well-trained employee is the ultimate competitive advantage. That's because employees are the real creators of value. They solve the big and little problems that get in the way of earnings growth every day. Training your people has a definite and ultimate ROI. In fact, the prosperity and welfare of many, many organizations depends on investment in training at all levels.

Gary Hamel, writing in Leader To Leader Magazine in 2003, made the provocative argument that the range of strategies and tactics companies have available to them to drive share prices and earnings are narrowing down to investing in people. After all, it is people who have the ideas that create intangible assets like brands, or IP, and it is in them that a company must invest if it is to grow. Yet brick and mortar investments often trump training budgets.
